What is pH excursion in wastewater treatment?

Published on by in Technology

Can someone please tell me what the pH in wastewater treatment is?
Would you also please share a document for the modification of effluent pH, limitation guidelines, standards for point sources and monitoring continuous effluent pH value.

  1. Dear Asuku,

In wastewater treatment the excursion of pH varies depending upon the incoming wastewater characteristics and the string of treatment processes that have been incorporated in the treatment of this wastewater. For example, if the pH of the incoming wastewater is acidic (5 - 7) and the further treatment consists of an anaerobic phase followed by an aerobic phase followed by coagulation flocculation and filtration, the change sequence for pH will be Acidic (initial), Neutral (after anaerobic), slightly alkaline (after aeration), neutral to acidic (after coa-floc), neutral - acidic (after filtration). However, if there is no anaerobic phase, the changes in the sequence can take place depending on process.

These changes in the pH during its excursion in wastewater are, as I said earlier, dependent on the sequence of process. Hence, it will be necessary for you to experience these excursions separately for each process. Its quite an interesting study if you want to take it up. I have already seen various sequences due to my job.
