Data Centre Water Planning | Key Decisions to Make Early
Published by SIMON MASON, Group Marketing Manager at Envirogen Group for Envirogen Group in Case Studies
Water is moving earlier into the data centre planning process.
Recent developments in Scotland and the United States illustrate how water demand, source, treatment and environmental impact are increasingly being considered before major design and infrastructure decisions are finalised.
Envirogen Group’s latest article looks at what this means in practice for data centre developers, operators, MEP consultants and design-build teams.
The central point is simple: water strategy should be resolved early enough to influence the project, rather than treated as a downstream equipment decision.
A practical early-stage review should consider areas including:
- Average and peak water demand.
- Cooling architecture and associated water-quality requirements.
- Mains, groundwater, reclaimed water, surface water and other suitable source-water options.
- Water reuse, recovery and recycling opportunities.
- High-recovery treatment and, where justified, Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD).
- Discharge requirements, local water constraints and permitting.
- Source-water variability and whether pilot trials are required.
- Monitoring, Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) and wider performance data.
- Contingency supply and resilience.
- Future expansion and whole-life cost.
These issues are interconnected. A different source-water strategy can change treatment requirements. Higher recovery can reduce feedwater demand and wastewater volumes but may affect energy use, residuals handling and process complexity. Cooling choices can change both water demand and required water quality.
For major and hyperscale data centre developments, resolving these questions before plant space, utilities, interfaces and infrastructure decisions are locked in can reduce the risk of later redesign, programme disruption and avoidable cost.
