Groundwater Modelling & Water Resilience | EA Framework

England’s Groundwater Modelling National Framework 2026–2034 puts renewed focus on how groundwater resources are understood, protected and managed.
In this article, Envirogen Group examines the connection between better groundwater intelligence and the next stage of water-resource decision-making.
Groundwater modelling can help water companies, hydrogeologists, consultants and planners understand aquifers, recharge, abstraction impacts and future resource availability. But identifying a sustainable groundwater resource does not automatically mean it can enter or remain in drinking-water supply. Nitrate, arsenic, pesticides and other water-quality constraints may still require source protection, blending, operational controls or appropriate treatment.
Envirogen Group does not provide groundwater modelling. Its role sits downstream, helping project teams assess how water treatment can support resilient supply where water quality, rather than sustainable abstraction, becomes the limiting factor.
As AMP8 delivery continues and WRMP29 and AMP9 planning develops, the article considers why groundwater modelling, sustainable abstraction, source protection, water quality and treatment should increasingly inform one another rather than sit in separate workstreams.
