Job opportunities and potential trend for water and wastewater treatment

Published on by in Technology

Hi everyone,

I am a MSc Environmental Engineering student in Germany. My background is water and wastewater treatment engineering. I am going to graduate soon, so I would like to ask few things about job and opportunities:

1. Which kinds of knowledge should I prepare to work in this field?

Studying at the university is very interesting and gives students solid background. But sometimes I feel like it is more theoretical for researching and lacking of practical skills for working. So which other skills are required to be a wastewater treatment engineer?

2. I will try to find jobs in both Germany, Europe, or my home country Vietnam. Which countries in Europe may have prospects for job seeking in this field?

3.  My interest is biological wastewater treatment. If possible, I would like focus on a technology/field/trend that could be potential for future development. Could you suggest me some potential ones?

I really appreciate your sharing! Thank you very much for your time!

  1. No doubt that water has become a precious commodity and it will be ideal if youngsters like you take the reins NOW and direct it properly.  There are many opportunities for you in this field but, it is important that you make up your mind - academics or research.  The situation has become much more critical now and post pandemic scenario is likely to be entirely different from what you had hoped for in January this year.  I sincerely suggest you to browse the latest TREND and gear up to those demands.  Wastewater is no more a waste but, a resource.  All the best.

  2. I ran a Wastewater plant in the USA our WEF chapter NEWEA which represented the New England states had a program where people like yourself could reach out to listed treatment plants to intern and get the hands on experience. Even just a couple of days makes a big difference. At our plant they would make a portfolio with pictures made a great reference and helped with future employment.

  3. You shall be preparing only theory at your college levels.  When you go in for internship, you will try to correlate theory with what is practically being done in the field.

You should take training for waste water treatment in Germany and then I feel your own country may be having a huge potential for waste water engineers.
