Pseudomonas aeruginosa in drinking water
Published on by Brigita Jamnik in Case Studies
Dear Sirs,
we have faced with the extraordinary event: the Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the part of drinking water net. Drinking water from this part of water supply does not have the influence to the other parts of water supply system.
A lot of measures have been performed and the experiences confirmed, what we had previously learned from the literature:
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance and ability to oppose the interference is high,
- the flushing can remove the Pseudomonas aeruginosa partly,
- the disinfection is effective, but not efficient, the growth of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa starts immediately, after the conc. of disinfection agents is declined,
- when the biofilm is opened, the Pseudomonas aeruginosa starts randomly its way with the flow of water.
We would appreciate if you can share your experiences on efficient measures on combating this kind of microorganisms in water supply systems.

BioSure aqueous ozone is a powerful natural disinfectant reactive oxygen generated from water and electricity which can deliver a 99.999 percent reduction of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa after 15 seconds of exposure.
Aqueous ozone is chemical free. For additional information contact jeff.foote@biosurena.com 770-925-5321; www.besgroups.com

Brigita. I have obtained licensure and distribution of a non-chemical treatment technology which induces frequencies into and through the water column within any pipe of any size. Though not the initial targeted application, this disruptive technology has now been documented as having disinfectant properties as the frequency emitted is causing microbiological cell walls to implode due to the osmotic imbalance created internally and externally at the cell wall. The "mic" colonies, fouling algae, legionaria will be cleared and will not return. Case studies have shown numerous applications in water and wastewater and agriculture applications in greatly reducing or removing the chemical demands. Feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Some natural treatments for pseudomonas are:
- Freshly grated horseradish: Take 1/2-1 tsp of grated root per meal and with a bedtime snack, with a mouthful of milk.
- Lemons: Add some fresh lemon to your water and smoothies, to boost your immune system and help your liver detoxify.
- Other antibacterial foods and herbs: Garlic, ginger, turmeric, oregano, thyme, honey, etc.
The results of recent study reveal a novel mechanism contributing to NLRC4 activation by P. aeruginosa via mitochondrial damage and release of mitochondrial DNA triggered by the bacterial T3SS that is downregulated by autophagy

As Pseudomonas are a film forming bacteria, you will need to dose the system with a biodispersant. Chlorine Dioxide is also affective at penetrating biofilms. Once treatment has commenced, biological levels and readings will increase as bacteria becomes free of the biofilm. Continuous treatment must continue at elevated levels until these numbers reduce to acceptable levels, and must then be continued at a maintenance rate.

Brigita,
Pseudomonas is very difficult to remove from water systems, but once having removed you must ensure that it doesn't form again. The only disinfectant that is powerful enough to eradicate pseudomonas is chlorine dioxide. Now don't confuse chlorine dioxide with chlorine. They are completely different. While chlorine has 2 electrons to do the job chlorine dioxide has 5, this makes chlorine dioxide 2.5x more powerful than chlorine. When pseudomonas is under a biofilm then chlorine firstly is ineffective in let alone removing the biofilm but even penetrating it. Secondly, the demand for chlorine is very high and it gets consumed, for these reasons alone it has been found that chlorine dioxide is the only disinfectant that can effectively remove pseudomonas from water systems.

Giovanni Pavanello - This is very useful for rapid detection of biofilms, but knowing that they exist - and the relative ineffectiveness of chlorination - do you have any references that have methods to prevent biofilm formation?

Steven Cooke - Over the past 11 years of activity, we have proved the effectiveness of different treatments against biofilm, one of the most common is chlorine dioxide http://biofilm.online/otc

Global Water Group's "water purification systems" for the U.S. Military (from Back-Packs to Base Camps) since 1990 removes and/or inactivates pathogens. Global's, soon to begin, manufacturing of its Nano-Tech Water Purification Filter will take it to the next level of purity.

Hello, you may consider alternative disinfectants such as silver and copper:

The issue is more common than you can expect - and it is usually caused by biofilm. As you know, this layer of bacteria is the ideal environment fo survival and proliferation of pathogens - biofilm is up to 1000x more resistant to chemicals than free-floating bacteria. More and more water utilities are starting to monitor biofilm, to apply chemical or physical treatments as soon as it starts to form, and thus to get the best results:

Dear Brigita, I guess that the pseudomonas is within the biofilm?
I looked up some advise from the Environment agency in Germany. Thermal and /or chemical disinfection is suggested. Often a thermal disinfection is not suitable. If the chemical treatment over 4 weeks is not sufficient and regrowth appears (what happens in your case). The last line of defense is the change of the contaminated parts.
Any idea of the source? If chnging the parts you could install at the POU Filter plus UV to ensure safe water for the customers/users.
My 2 ct's. Wish you a lot of success.
