Reference for wastewater treatment costing UK

Published on by in Technology

Does anyone have a reference to recommend for a draft costing estimate for wastewater plant (AAO) possibly for UK context?

Thank you.

  1. I have worked in the UK water industry for ~25 years (primarily in capital investment) but your question is too vague and one that will not get a complete answer.  Costs are dependent on size of plant, strength of wastewater to be treated, discharge parameters to be met, where the plant is to be sited etc.  Too many variables and something that is not just confined to the UK.

You can ask one of the utilities (which they will be only too pleased to tell you about their capital programme), but they might say PlantX STW cost £5M, but the actually build cost may only be 2/3 of this.   The other costs are due to the cost to get it through their procurement process, planning, land purchase, PR, design, overheads etc.  Even their estimating tools that they use are pretty wide of the mark.  Time and time again I hear of companies estimating that the cost of a plant will be X but when they go to market it is Y, with Y being significantly greater than X.

    1. Thank you Kevin. I understand the complexity of the subject but while for other countries I could find cost functions, for example, I am struggling similar sources for the UK sector.

  2. Bonjour Giacomo

    Bonjour Giacomo

All wastewaters are the same from all over this earth. Water from organic pollution from bio-chemical or chemical pollution.

What matters is the condition of these wastewaters from the point of view of biology.

The more their biological characteristics have been preserved the easier it is to purify them properly.

As soon as there is a too large presence of bio-chemical or chemical, the current infrastructure is unable to respond to such a request.

Each chemical molecule must be treated separately and by appropriate treatment for its molecular composition and its percentage of presence. It is also necessary to Tenri account of the Intger action that is made between the chemical molecules between them and the presence of oxygen.

    A puzzle impossible to solve.

The objective for a relative performance is to intervene in the production of these wastewaters

  3. You *might* get some help by writing to a company that has built these before.

You *might* get help by writing to a water company - I would suggest Severn Trent Water or Thames Water.

There is a UK-standard costing system, TR61, which we (WRc) develop, but it is on behalf of the water industry so that they normally use it. It does not include a cost for an AAO system. Activated sludge would be costed on the volume of the aeration tank and the volume of the aerated section of the aeration tank. If you are using something fancier than standard diffusers then you may need to add additional costs. You would need to estimate any mechanical mixer costs in the anoxic / anaerobic sections.

The Irish Republic has the water company publically owned. This means that more information may be in the public domain. See if you can find any costs for Phase 2 of the Midleton sewage works, which, I *think*, is an AAO system. Phase I was AO.

    Good luck!
