Biodigester in Households for Sludge Treatment
Published on by Temple Oraeki, Nigeria, Country Rep. & WASH Coordinator at Hope Spring Water in Technology
How can a biodigester be successfully implemented in a household to generate energy and treat faecal sludge? Which type of biodigester is the most convenient for a household and why?
What are the challenges of using a biodigester at homes or even IDP camps?
I would appreciate examples of where this technology has been successfully used.

A cheaper solution is to convert the sludge into charcoal.
See video in link below.
It shows a system installed in Ghana where wastewater is collected from storrage tanks from public toilets or collection tanks at individual houses.
Sludge is converted into charcoal.
The water is treates so it safely can ve reused -
Dear Temple Oraiki,
A Biodigester simply means a tank which digests organic material biologically. In this sense, the FilterPod is a biodigester.A specially engineered container called the bio-digester ensures effective treatment of bio-waste.Waste decomposition takes place in stages of electrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis & methan
However, many people think of a biodigester as a tank which digests, anaerobically, without air, organic material and produces methane gas for cooking, lighting and heating ect.
The composition of the gases produced by this type of biodigester is about 60% Methane, 30% Carbon Dioxide and the rest is Hydrogen Sulphide
Treating human waste through Anaerobic Digestion is an incredibly ethical sanitation technology. Anaerobic Digestion occurs in bio digesters and produces a fuel (biogas), removes Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) from sewage, conserves nutrients (especially nitrogen compounds) and most importantly reduces pathogens. Excessive concentrations of human waste damages the environment, because it is loaded with BOD, nutrients, and anthropozoonotic diseases.
Post treatment and sterilization
Biodigester effluent may also be treated in a secondary treatment phase such as Ultrafiltration, Ultraviolet Light (UV), a Treatment Wetland, Composting, or Aerobic Treatment. Ultra filtration consists of running the effluent through a membrane that only allows solubles to pass through. At the moment this technology is more likely to be used in the developed world but appropriate solutions using materials such as mangroves and other plants might be used. Ultrafiltration is practical for concentrated wastewaters that have had most solids settled out. UV treatment is a common water treatment technology however may only be practical for dilute effluents where turbidity is not an issue.

Hello, it would be good to say is what a bio digester? What is it?
In this term, ago bio and digester. bio for biological.
Bio: At this level there is a malfunction of precision. Indeed so that we can define the use of the , or characterize an item such as being organic must be the element to deal with feature - biological- This term is diverted from its original value.
This - biological - feature for the majority of households, is not 80% to say the least.
Digester:
This term is used in all directions to all sauces without it being known really what determines what is this signifgie t - it and especially without any evidence of its effectiveness since actually he can't remove the fecal matter.
In there is a single function: biodegradation. This function exists only in one condition: the , the crafty sanitation invented this word 'digester', which actually means nothing. What for?Just because the digestion must be done by two means: one who manipulates the tool and the tool. Off sanitation it is neither one nor the other.
In addition the it is the science of life, of living. Off the mud is inert, dead.
For evidence, more than 45 million tonnes of sludge of excrement are produced annually by the world population. If there is significant production of mud as it is that there is no such thing as the biodigestion.
It cannot exist at least for these two reasons: - the wastewater effluent aren't - biological - biochemical, - once the fecal became mud, the biodegradation process is no longer applicable.
However with effluent - biological - biodegradation process is totally applicable since it happens naturally. Actually mother NATURE operates at the end of life of all organic matter, this process of elimination that the technicality stop immediately into mud.
A fecal matter by the process of biodegradation is eliminated between 12 and 15 days. which is not the case of the mud that it is eliminated in time month/year.

A biodigesters was first designed and perfected by Dr carl H. Oppenheimer in the early 1970's. The primary microbe used was the Archaea. This is an RNA microbe that is aerobic. It is the only classification of microbes that reduce organic compounds into their elemental/nutrient form. To make use of this efficient microbe a bio generator was developed to work in concert with the digester. The circular existence was tested in the desert of Kuwait. The system reduce all gray and black water into a clear potable water that was pumped back into the reservoir on top of the structure. The filtered biosolids now being odorless and non pathogenic were used to restore soil fertility and grow a vegetable garden. The final benefit was the collection of electrons that were released during the biodegradation process. Many styles of collectors. Oppenheimers first test in the late 50's was a transistor radio with copper wires attached and aluminum foil at the end dipped into the tank. Todays collectors are much more efficient. After one year no additional water was added to the structure's reservoir. Epilogue: During this experiment they were off the grid and 100% sustainable from water, waste, energy, vegetable food stuffs. Yes you can grow a garden or a forest in the hottest deserts. The Archaea have a working temperature of 180 F. DNA microbes are of minimal effectiveness. (bacteria and fungi).

The anaerobic is a simple view of the mind of a person who discovered a State of putrefaction advanced, quite incomprehensible to him, whom he named as opposed to an aerobic State anaerobic.
At this time we only discovered the aerobic State and the scientific community welcomed his vision of opposition.
Except that the following elements contradict this approach:
Water, H2O contains oxygen. Where there is water there is therefore necessarily oxygen. Even if there is a 0.001%.
The atmosphere is totally aerobic at several levels of its layer or it has been shown that there was life and in proportion. 21% on Earth, and decrease gradually and as we climb in altitude.
Those who speak of the anaerobic describe a medium often inaccessible and distant in the most remote places of our planet, there or it is of course impossible to check.
Some describe this environment in purification of wastewater.
Except that it is hard to admit that where there is water in aerobic condition with oxygen, can settle an anaerobic State without oxygen.
How is this medium for foothold?
How does this environment persist?
What is the trigger for creation of this State?
How and which would be able to delineate in oxygen aerobic environments, the component of the safety barrier of the aerobic State, of the anaerobic State in a liquid in motion?
By the principle of the existing atmospheric conditions on Earth, water and air are in perpetual motion. Because of this principle oxygen is regenerated continuously even in the remotest corners of our land. See the document as an attachment

One of the new directions for the organization Heifer International is to fund community biodigesters for the production of gases to burn to produce energy (electricity or other). Here's one link to one of their countries and the results they are achieving: https://uenergy.wordpress.com/2010/12/03/biogas-in-kapchorwa/

This technology has been successfully used in China and India

You can install a biogas plant to convert animal and human waste to biogas which can either be used for cooking or can run an electric generator specially designed for biogas.
