Microbial fuel cell

Question

How microbial cell can be used in the sewage treatment. Is this method commercialized or only confirmed in lab. Is it a costly method? What are the concerns in adopting this technology in the developing countries?
I know I'm thinking lots of thing together but I really want to know as to begin my project.

2 points of clarification. fuel cell???  which species to you intend to use.  This is an old technology. The least expensive and most efficient of all WWTP.  The average cost is one cent per 30 Gl.
