Pig farm  wastewater ​after biogas ​processing ​is currently ​being treated ​with anaerobic ​decomposition ​tunnels (tunnel ​biogas) in ​Vietnam.  ​

The concentration ​of ​environmental ​pollutants (TSS,​ COD, BOD, ​total N, total ​P) is still ​very high after ​this process ​and before ​wastewater is ​discharged into ​the near by field,​ it needs to be ​treated again.​  ​

How can we ​improve ​pig farm wastewater ​treatment process after biogas ​processing?​  ​

  2. It seems like the capacity of your anaerobic system is not enough to deal with the high organic load from the pig farm. I suggest an aerobic tank or lined pond with fine and ultrafine bubble generation to facilitate the composition of organic matter. 

    The most effective way would be to implement a membrane bio-reactor, this will provide BOD >5mg/L and COD >30mg/L and remove N and P as well. This essentially condenses an anaerobic and aerobic tank into one system and removes the need for a settling pond or clarifier by using membrane separation to achieve the desired filtration.

  4. A covered in-ground lagoon system. In this sealed system, bacteria digest the animal waste anaerobically, creating biogas that is used to power an electricity generator. Heat from the generator is then utilized to heat a hog farrowing house. Treated water from the digester unit is transported to a second earthen unit, from which it is used to flush waste out of livestock buildings and into the digester system. The effluent is irrigated seasonally onto Bermuda grass to remove excess nutrients. Plans are to use the effluent in the future for aquaculture and/or greenhouse plant production.

    Aerobic upflow fixed-media biofiltration/solids separation/solids coating. This system flushes pre-screened liquid manure through two biofilters containing plastic media, on which a film of bacteria is cultivated. The bacteria convert almost all the harmful ammonia in the wastewater into nitrates and nitrites, and reduce the concentration of odor-causing compounds. The system results in liquid effluent and solids that can be used as fertilizer.

    Sequencing batch reactor. This technology -- which has been used to treat wastewater from small communities for many years -- treats swine manure in a three-step sequence. The waste is transported to a containment vessel and subjected to an aeration cycle before solids are allowed to settle out for disposal. The process reduces organic carbon and phosphorus in the treated effluent. It also converts ammonia to nitrate and then turns the nitrate into nitrogen gas that can be released safely into the atmosphere.

    Constructed wetlands system. This system uses natural wetland plants to remove nitrogen from treated swine wastewater, therefore preventing the overloading of nutrients on agricultural land to which the effluent is applied. The plants are arranged in a series of free-surface-flow constructed wetland cells. The waste water is pre-treated by a solids-separation and aeration process before the wetland treatment, removing excess nutrients, odor-causing compounds, and converting ammonia into nitrate. As a result, harmless nitrogen gas rather than ammonia is released into the wetlands system.

    High temperature anaerobic digestion and solids composting. In this system, the manure is anaerobically digested in an enclosed and heated tank. The resulting biogas is used to produce electricity. Partially digested solids are combined with composted material; the resulting high-nutrient compost can be used for greenhouse crop production.

    In addition to addressing environmental concerns, Williams says, all five of the technologies significantly reduce odors usually associated with hog waste treatment systems.

    The stored manure is sometimes treated, either before or during storage.The reasons for treatment include:

    1.Odour control

    2. Energy recovery

    3. Reduction of manure volume—especially where extended transportation is necessary

    4. Reduction of nutrient content—in some circumstances where insufficient land is available to receive the manure

    5. Enhance (speed up) the decomposition of manure

I have a much lower cost solution to Offer that can be customised and fabricated system (NOT REQUIRING ANY HIGH COST MOLDING and TRANSPORT COSTS ) for available space, input wastes and possible end use for the process water in the anaerobic treatment cycle -- In addition, if any aerobic or UV Treatment of process waste water is required, additional modules can be put to use.

    Les eaux usées d'une ferme de porc sont spécifiques. Après un traitement biogas, le liquide a perdu toutes ses caractéristiques -biologique- 

    Un rejet de ce liquide dans l'environnement est sucidaire.

    On montre là  les limites des traitements alternatifs qui conduisent à cette situation de pollution grave de l'environnement 

    Chaque traitement alternatif détruit l'élément pour produire un résidu qui à son tour subit un traitement alternatif qui produit un autre résidu encore plus toxique.

    L'avantage de l'épuration biologique c'est que le traitement se fait à la source avec une solution globale et définitive.

    Le coût financier Dépenses/ rentabilité d'une production de biogas ne rattrappe jamais le coût financier des répercusions sanitaires de notre environnement

    A pig farm wastewater are specific. After treatment biogas, liquid has lost all its features - organic - a rejection of this liquid in the environment's therapist.

    It shows the limits of the alternative treatments that lead to this situation of serious environmental pollution each alternative treatment destroys the element to produce a residue which, in turn, is undergoing alternative treatment that produces another even more toxic residue.

    The advantage of the biological treatment is that the treatment is done at the source with a comprehensive and definitive solution.

    The financial cost expenses / profitability of biogas production don't chase never the financial cost of the health impact of our environment 

  6. We successfully tried a biological process on the liquid fraction (less than 1 g suspended solids/L), based on Anammox granular biomass provided by Paques (NL). The project was named BRAIN. Some results have been published in the following paper:

  7. I strongly recommend  Multi chamber low cost Bio-reactor with high surface area which can be modular and put in parallel or is series as well. With collection of Biogas thus generated out of anaerobic digestion of vegetative waste and animal dung, urine, etc., further treatments of aerobic digestion/ aeration/ UV radiation etc are possible as add on and final output can be tertiary water with balanced nutrients for irrigation. Oil spills and greases are not allowed in. Best part is that BIOREACTOR Can be installed u/g or in stacks. Only for biannual maintenance, undigested solids may have to be removed.

Prof. Jesús Fernández González (http://www.upm.es/observatorio/vi/index.jsp?pageac=investigador.jsp&idInvestigador=6432) and I are exploring with phytobiodepuration technologies from pig slurry directly to obtain premium fertilizers that can be sold and reduce the depreciation periof for the investment required. Do you have an average data of the pollutants value from the wastewater you obtain after biogas processing?

    1. yes. I have the data 

      anoxic -> biological trickling filter -> biological lagon, with following technologycal parameters: water flow 0.2 m/h, residence time in anoxic tank ~ 4h, in biological pond ~ 10 days, cross section of biological trickling filter tank 1m2. With the parameters input to the water as follows: TSS = 1228 mg/l; COD = 195mg/l BOD = 534 mg/l; N-NH4 = 405 mg/l; Ntotal =518 mg/l and Ptotal =67 mg/l,the water quality after the treatment process exhibit the respective parameters 108; 252; 116; 118; 185 and 22; performance efflciencifs are TSS ~90%o; COD ~ 80%; BOD ~ 78%; N-NH/ ~ 71%; ƩN ~ 64% and ƩP
