Water filter systems of packed particle beds – PPBs, could get safe drinking water to more of those in need than is otherwise possible. The proofs are extensive. For microbial contaminated water, PPB water filters consist of media of ceramics or glass, particles within a filter container. The filter media is treated with silver or copper depending on the application, whether for drinking water or other purification requirements. PPB systems can be tailored to the size of the community, from the smallest to the largest. For the developing world, the future of microbial water treatment could be in large-scale, point of use, water filters of PPBs, the filter media produced in-country or region. In low-income communities, these filter systems should be a short walk from homes. In middle- or high-income communities the water may be piped into homes.

About PPB water filters, continued.... The two kinds of PPB filters are those of granulated ceramic filter media and those of glass micro beads. Both have the advantage that they can be produced at low cost almost anywhere. Both support nature-based approaches in that they depend on gravity only, given the input of clear water. Water filter media of glass micro beads is the contribution of faculty at the incomparable Ceramic College of of Alfred University, Alfred.edu. In municipal water treatment, PPB filter media could substitute for slow sand treatment, with little or no subsequent need of UV or RO disinfection.
