Austria is an exceptionally water-rich country, with national water stress not considered a pressing issue because the nation only consumes about 3% of its available water resources. Additionally, it is one of the few EU countries where 100% of the drinking water is sourced directly from pristine groundwater and natural springs. However, despite this baseline abundance, Austria faces specific regional, infrastructural, and environmental challenges. The key water issues facing the country include:
1. Regionalized Water Stress and Groundwater Depletion
2. Emerging Pollutants and Water Quality
3. Extreme Weather Events and Glacial Retreat
4. Regulatory and Legal Friction
and a few more.
In this recent publication of ours, we've not just done an extensive research on the issues, but have also worked out on sustainable solutions.
