We need to stop looking at Soil, Water and Air separately, we advocated the same during Riyadh Summit too. All three are linked, symbiotic in nature as well as interdependent. You contaminate one and the ripple effect will be there in all of them; You restored the health of one and the ripple effect will be seen in all of them.
Look at desertification – why does that happen? Absence of Water (moisture) in Soil leads to drought, and consistent drought leads to desertification. Similarly, forest fires and many other incidents.
All three of them together impact the ground Water and the biodiversity too, and vice-versa. Why did the river dry in the Yellow Stone forest in US? Because we (human beings) destroyed the fine balance of the native biodiversity.
If we really want to combat desertification, which is the key agenda of UNCCD COP17: Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, we need to start looking in a holistic fashion. Without think of Water, Waterbodies, Water Chanels, moisture (in Soil and in Air); we can’t combat desertification.
