I want to reduce 40-50% COD and all Fat oil and Grease (FOG) from cosmetics wastewater in primary treatment. Where the COD and FOG concentration in wastewater 50000 mg/L and 500mg/L respectively. Kindly suggest suitable process/technique for above primary treatment. You can contact me on my mail id muntzir.ali@gmail.com ;   regards

  1. Hello Muntjeer, go for DAF along with de-emulsifier.

  2. Dear Mr Muntjeer,

Some years ago, I made jar tests and one trial with DAF pilot plant for two cosmetic industries.

The COD was in both cases around 25000 30000 mg/l and Fats around 1500-2000 mg/l.

Minimum COD removal was 60% and the average 75%. Minimum Fats removal 70% and the average 90%.

The chemical consumption and floated sludge production was high.

I don’t know your daily flow but normally for cosmetic industries the flow is relatively low.

DAF as primary treatment can be a solution and the following aerobic treatment plant works well but the sludge disposal is problematic.

I think that must be studied also the possibility to apply an evaporator or an anaerobic reactor.

  3. This isn't easy as there will be a mixture of emulsions, which need to be split using some form of coagulant and polymer as well as more solid material such as lipsticks, which sometimes may be too heavy to float using a DAF unit. Have you carried out a BOD on the waste to determine the biologically degradability compared to the COD.
