Checking Algae Formation

Can anyone suggest checking algae formation in a geo-membrane lined farm pond or a pond where rainwater/rooftop rainwater is harvested?

Hello Yashpal,
Attached is our sales brochure for the Quattro DB ultra sonic equipment. I have attached a couple of photos of the plastic lined pond showing the clarity of the water. There is a small amount of fine sediment and dead algae on the plastic but the water is good and does not block the filters on the pump systems for the hydroponics system. We have numerous ultra sonic systems installed in NZ including drinking water reservoirs for municipal councils.
Contact me on sales.alphaenviro@outlook.com.

Yes I can confirm that we sold a Quattro DB ultrasonic unit to a client in New Zealand that was collecting all the rain water off the roof top of there glass houses. the collected water was stored in a plastic lined dam and the client had a constant problem with algae blooms. after installation of the Quattro DB the algae problem was resolved and has never returned. The stored water is now used for a large hydroponic growing system with great success.

Thanks Mr. Ivory. Please give more information on the Quattro DB ultrasonic unit. Where is it available/ cost / area of pond or volume of water it caters, etc. I am in India near Mumbai.

One of our Quattro-DB units will likely cover any pond of this type to control most algae formation as well as biofilm that would grow on the liner.

Thanks George. Your information and the 7-page info file on the Quattro DB ultrasonic unit is really helpful. I'll contact the company to know how I can get it, as I am in India near Mumbai. Thanks again.

You might try adding ionic silver - Ag+. This can be produced by what is referred to as a 'colloidal silver generator,' while the colloid is more accurately called electrically isolated silver. This is remarkably effective even in very low concentrations, eg. 10ppm.

Growth of algae need phosphate in water. Is it attached growth on the membrane or suspended growth. Latter makes water greenish. What is the end of use water collected in the tank.
If it is used for domestic activities then you can have Pressure sand filter followed by activated carbon filter & chlorination.
For drip irrigation you may have online filter.

Try Extract of Barley Straw - sold under ‘Ecopond’ label but made by Aquahydrotech Ltd. it really does work for algal bloom control and is a natural and non toxic product

Prevention is better than cure. Use Hexa cover a floating cover to prevent sunlight reaching the water as well as reduce evaporation loss and prevent water contamination .

It should be possible to provide a floating black Polyethylene Film Cover to cut off sun light. Introduction of frogs and fish whose larvae survive on algae is also effective. Specific water treatment process shall be required before this water is utilised for any purposes. If you want , less percolation, you may fence the pond to disallow cattle etc entering the pond.

With "checking algae formation" do you mean checking if it is producing toxins? If you are aerosoling this water or using it for agricultural or drinking water purposes, it is essential to insure you are not bioaccumulating cyanotoxins or BMAA in your media, drinking water system or in your food supply. Elisa testing is a viable technique to provide you with a rough answer on the cyanotoxins. You will need to find a research laboratory to find out if you have BMAA in your algae blooms.
If you wish to collect rainwater for drinking water purposes it is essential that you do not permit any algae growth in your collectors. As others have said, a dark container with no light penetration is required. If toxic algae is suspected you will need to ensure water is ultrafiltrated to remove as much of the organic matter as possible, before the water is put into storage (this is a sound practice even if you don't have existing algae problems). You may also need to chlorinate that water since this is one of the very few ways to neutralize algae toxins.

Ultrasonic generators, many companies offer these including solar powered.

Rainfall/rooptop rnof is bets stored in a closed tank to avoid algae, dust and dead animals. But if its a pond, then all i can think of is introducing some algae eating fish that are native to the area.

Algea will grow unless you treat the water or remove the light, which is not possible with a pond. The collect and use rainwater you need a tank for storage.

Dear Sir
Algea grow by N in Air and using Photosyn so cut off the light they will gone.
