Which wastewater treatment method is most efficient in fish farming?
Published on by H T
Hi, does anyone have any experience with fish effluent (waste water) treatment? We use MBR plants for waste water treatment in fish farms.
I think there is a large scope of improvements in existing fish farming effluent treatment methods.
What is your experience, which method are you using for efficient reuse of water? Please share.

I think you can apply UV as disinfection, but it will work on three season only. Make sure that you have large capacity for hold water and controlling it. This lead to enough storm water management within the process. Monitoring of industries within or that are discharging into the system. All spillages (Oils, Chemicals and etc.) are monitored in terms of accident within your area.

Dear Hans: the most suitable ww treatment should ve redituable. Also, simple to use, low cost, compact, longlife, efficient and with 2 highlighted points: fullfill your law requirements and portable. I can design it to you as ww expert (more than 25 yrs of field experience in industry at PhD level.
As one colleague said, I will need some basic data to suit the better solution to you. Is similar to a consult with a specialized phisician: you have to explain thw nature of your health situation and he/she will prescribe some laboratory essays or some image diagnosis. Depending upon the values or the interpretation of images, he/she will fit a treatment to you. We do more or less the same. The design of ww system will depwnd upon your local conditons. Hi Hans. I'm a W&WW professional who has run an aquaculture design company. I recommend a case by case approach considering water quality, species, climate, nature of hatchery / grow-out operation (e.g., degree of recirulation, water supply, etc.). I favour biological treatment that generates biomass that can be used at the facility, preferably to reduce feed costs, improve sustainability, etc.. There is a need to design an aquacuture specific treatment system to suit the site characteristics. If recirculation is involved, the sensitivity of the product becomes a major / key design criteria. Just framing the topic. Thanks for raising the question and look forward to more specific queries.

Hi Hans
I worked on a biological purification treatment of wastewater project for an agricultural college . The person in charge of sanitation of the school demanded strict enforcement of compliance with wastewater by removing any chemical cleaner. The water discharge at the outlet of the treatment device , biological, was sent to a pond filled with carps. the only problem was from forming large quantities of surface green vase .

Dear Hans
The aquatic environment must meet the needs of the farmed organism, both in respect of water quality and physical properties. Particles are the undissolved fraction of the feed input to the system. These particles are normally measured as suspended solids (SS). In a recirculated fish farm, particles originate from waste feed and feces. In a farm with intake from surface waters, organic and inorganic particles will also constitute a portion of the particle distribution. As stated in the section on tanks and ponds, self-cleaning properties are very important for down stream filtration systems, particles must be transported quickly and removed gently from the system. Micro screens can be installed at fish farm outlets for reduction of solids loading on downstream rivers. Sometimes filters are employed at inlets to increase intake water quality.
Potentially harmful substances-e.g. pesticides, heavy metals and hydrocarbons-are often released into the aquatic environment. When large quantities of pollutants are released there may be an immediate impact as measured by large-scale sudden mortalities of aquatic organisms, e.g. fish kills resulting from contamination of waterways with agricultural pesticides.
Following filters can be used for fish farming.
- Disc filters
- Drum filters
- Belt filters
Drum filter is a mechanical and self-cleaning filter
Function of Drum- and Disc filters:
- Water to be filtered enters the inside of the drum.
- The water is filtered through the drum’s filter elements. The difference in water level inside/outside the drum is the driving force for the sieving.
- Solids are trapped on the filter elements and lifted to the back-wash area by the rotation of the drum. The drum rotation is intermittent or continuous depending on type of control.
- Water from rinse nozzles is sprayed from the outside of the f lter elements. The rejected material is washed out of the filter elements into the sludge tray.
- Rejected sludge flows together with water by gravity out of the filter.
The benefits of micro screen filtration are as follows:
- Reduction of organic loading on bioflter(s).
- Improving turbidity of water.
- Reduction of larvae and eggs of some parasites.
- Improving conditions for nitrification
- Stabilising function of bio filters.
BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION
Some of the waste from fish and feed will be dissolved and has to be degraded or transformed into harmless substances. Again you have to consider organic material and nitrogen containing substances, (Phosphorous is an inert substance, with no toxic effect). The Bio filters can be used for that.
Fluidised bed filters:
Bio filters must be designed to operate as nitrification filters
At less than 5 PPM BOD, heterotrophe bacteria will be limited in growth by lack of substrate, conditions will be in favour of nitrifi cation i.e. nitrosomonas and nitrobacter will have a higher growth rate. This can only be achieved by a combination of feed management, sizing of surface area and microfi ltration before biofi lters.
Carbon dioxide
Production of CO2 is related to oxygen consumption in fish and degradation of organic material in biological filters. With CO2 the PH of water will come down and to be maintained by following
Neutralisation by Ca(OH)2 :
Neutralisation by NaHCO3 :
UV water purification –
The best answer for aquariums, ponds and fish farms
A UV-lamp water purification system typically employs a light with a wavelength of 254 nanometres. Aquarium water pumped through the UV chamber is exposed to this light and irradiated. Free-floating microorganisms are affected by the UV light and are no longer able to multiply. Through continual use, UV-lamp purification can help manage water quality issues such as bacteria, algae, and parasites.

Hi Hans,
We may have a sustainable idea to address your question with a natural product. However, before providing you with it, could you answer the following:
1. How much phosphorous do you have in your waste water?
2. Is a composition of this waste water available?
Best regards,
Laurent H. Selles

a fish farm microbe Biocleaner unit can clean in situ with very little opex and tiny capex.
with no need to discharge any water. just add more water for evaporative loss.
DO will stay high. no fish kills. tn and ammonia will be at none detect levels.
the fish will grow much faster and healthier.

Hi Hans
We have a simple solution to this problem. We have a product to grow Diatom Algae in the fish ponds, Diatoms consume the nutrients and CO2 and produce Oxygen, during photosynthesis. Diatoms are consumed by Zooplankton such as Copepods, these are the natural food for fish and shrimp. So this is a very logical and complete process.
Our product can be also be used in the MBR process tanks, power consumption for aeration will reduce by 50% to 90%, sludge will decline, membrane life will increase, etc.
Our product is Nualgi - Nutrients for Algae.
Please write to me for more information.
