Contacts in Guatemala, Nicaragua, or Colombia

Published on by in Non Profit

Hi,

I run a small non-profit that partners with in-country organizations and communities on clean water and sanitation projects, and I'm starting to look for my next project in either Guatemala, Nicaragua, or Colombia (currently working in Colombia). I'm trying to make contact with local organizations to partner with, and have had limited success hearing back from places I have emailed. Maybe this is due to Covid, who knows, but I just thought I'd ask and see if anyone had contacts in these countries?

Thank you,

Brian

  1. Thank you for all the responses. I'll go ahead an make contacts with the people/organizations that you all provided.

Ramakar, at this time I do not have any plans for India.

Jay, yes, I don't think I'll be able to get much done on the ground right now, but the hope would be to plan now for a project to start in the future. I did not realize how bad things were in Nicaragua. So maybe that's somewhere to hold off on for now.

As far as what type of water project, that's really driven by the need. Water filtration, distribution systems, rainwater harvesting and storage, etc., and also any hygiene and sanitation needs in the community. We try and use simple and appropriate technologies as much as possible.

    Thanks again.

  2. Hey Brian, thanks for reaching out. I'm leading a global volunteer network on freshwater biodiversity and sustainability (FWBON). We work in individual projects with partners on the ground to understand drivers of biodiversity change including in particular rural development. We have a very active regional network in Colombia engaged in various socio-ecological projects also in collaboration with indigenous communities. Not sure if that fits your goals but if you want to discuss these ideas further,  please contact our regional coordinator, Angélica in Colombia on abatista@humboldt.org.co . Best cheers Andi

  3. Hi Brian,

I used to work for a Swiss foundation / NGO which is operating with local partners in Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. They have no WASH projects and water harvesting / disaster risk reduction are their focal points closest to WASH.

On the other hand they are familiar with the NGO-landscape in the countries you mention and  might be able to help you.

The foundation's homepage is: www.vivamosmejor.ch / (https://www.vivamosmejor.org.gt/sitio/: their partner organisation in Guatemala).

    Kind regards

    Richard

  4. Hello Brian, I sat on the board on a nonprofit conducting work in El Salvador and Nicaragua. The organization is CoCoDA and is located in Indianapolis, IN. https://www.cocoda.org/ The executive director is Jim Mulholland. CoCoDA works with several NGOs in-country and can connect you with his contacts. info@cocoda.org

    1. Hi Susanne,

I just wanted to say thank you very much for recommending I contact CoCoDA. I spoke to Jim earlier this week, and it sounds like we're going to collaborate on a project starting next Spring!

      Have a great weekend!

      Thanks again,

      Brian

  5. COVID-related lockups and closures have impacted entities everywhere. I suggest you keep trying. If you have any personal contacts, phoning may be the best bet. Also, check into the AIDIS (Interamerican Society of Sanitary and Environmental Engineering and Sciences) website. AIDIS has a local branch in each and every country in the Americas (Alaska to Cape Horn) and can probably help you contact the right people. Their website is https://aidisnet.org

If your organization is active in Latin America, you should consider joining as an institutional member.

  6. Covid has slowed our projects to a halt in Central and South America. I have worked in Nicaragua on several water projects with my NGO, and I have not been able to get much done since their uprising two years ago. What type of water projects are you looking to do?
