Sewer Pipe Cleaning Methods

Published on by in Academic

Traditionally, sewer pipe cleaning methods are categorized to:

In a research project, we are going to propose new methods for cleaning.

The network has RC and PE pipes (250 mm to 1200 mm) and is only used for waste water (the rain water network is separated).

The network is currently being washed by water jet with pressure lower than 100 bar and old nozzles.

Unfortunately, this process is inefficient.

Are there any more efficient alternative methods?

  1. Using bioaugmentation products as a preventive maintenance program for keeping sewer pipe clean is a very efficient and cost effective plan.  Bioaugmentation will break down the sludge, biofilm, and other organic matter in the pipe system into carbon dioxide and water.  Biofilms often act like cement does in concrete, binding aggregates together to form a structure.  Removing these biofilms allows the aggregates to be forced out and reduce resistance to flow.  Microbial Discovery Group is a direct manufacturer of Bacillus bacteria used in wastewater bioaugmentation products.  I can provide a formal case study to you if you provide your email.  Using bioaugmentation can drastically reduce the number of times that jetting is required.  Usually 2 or 3 out of 4 jettings are eliminated.  Our case study even documents how struvite was removed from force mains over a mile long.

  2. Dear Reza,

if you do not find the right content in the report, please have a look at this report: http://www.ikt.de/down.php?f=12

If it might be a problem of the language I would use google translater to get an overview what is written in the report.

I you have some question in detail it is possible to contact the project managers at IKT:

Serdar Ulutas or Marco Schlüter. You will find their E-Mail-Adresses on the homepage of IKT.

Especially Marco has tested sewer cleaning equipment of different network operators in germany.  In many cases they were i. e astonished that the pressure at the nozzle was less than 100 bars.

    Good luck

    Christoph

P.S.: If you have the special problem to clean syphons please have a look at this report: http://www.ikt.de/down/f0121langbericht.pdf

P.P.S.: If you want to learn more about cleaning and inspection of rising mains you find more content here: http://www.ikt.de/down/f0139langbericht.pdf

  3. Using water jet under 100 bar for 1200 diameter should be difficult to have any results. It depends a lot of the network design (slope, diameter, etc) and the kind of "obstructions" you have. To add some ideas for what other collegues said, you can also thing in "pigging" techniques. In larger diameters the solution maybe is going inside and do the work.

  4. Good Morning

My name is Theo Huitema and working for Acti-Zyme Canada in Haiti. I have used Acti ZYme in Zimbabwe the town of Bulawayo to clean up more them 25km of sewage pipelines with great success. Mechnical cleaning is very costly while Acti Zyme is very effective a naturel product  and economically. Over 600 towns in Canada are using it.

I can guarantee you success and we are even willing to send you some free Acti Zyme to test it. Visit Acti-Zyme.com and ask for Bill our CEO. I tell you you will be happy to use Acti-Zyme as  it has multiple actions like taking faul odor, turn the solids in water good for irrigation, it can create 40% biogas more and above all it kills E-Coli. Please give me a mail or mail Acti Zyme directly.

    Keep well and in touch.

  5. In Germany the Ruhr University of Bochum published a report about demand-oriented sewer cleaning, including tests. The project was in cooperation with the IKT - Institute for Underground Infrastructure. You can download the report for free here:

    http://www.ikt.de/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/f237-abschlussbericht-bedarfsorientierte-kanalreinigung-phase2

The report is only published in german. The german word for sewer cleaning is "Kanalreinigung". You will find more reports about sewer cleaning here http://www.ikt.de/downloads/forschungsberichte/ , if you searching using the german expression.

    Best regards

    1. Dear Christoph,

It seems that the report is very comprehensive. Unfortunately I can't use it. By the way, thanks a lot.

  6. I can see 2 courses of action. 1. add one teaspoon of RNA microbes daily to every home or business discharging waste into your system. Benefits= odor eliminated, house and utility pipes are cleaned, the waste flowing to WWTP will be greatly reduced. Eliminate the chlorination cycle and within 24 hours the former waste will be eliminated and you may return this (after testing)back to the potable water reservoir.  2. Collect rainwater, filter/UV it, use as needed, install a bio digester with a bio generator.  Benefits: no utility infrastructure costs, fresh clean potable water in abundance, biodegrading waste causes loose electrons which can be collected and used as an additional energy source, add a cistern to your homestead sufficient to hold 2 years of your water use, grow V gardens,  learn food storage, build a green house onto your house, multiple alternative energy resources.  When complete you will be 100% off the grid and 100% sustainable.

I understand this is like going to the store to buy a tire and they sell you a new car for the price of the tire.

  7. Hi M. Reza,

We supply a solution called OxyFlow for this purpose. It basically breaks the structure of organic layer and reduce the FOG to prevent/eliminate clogging. Send me an email for more info. This product is already applied in city pipe networks, WWTP's, Sewer Plants, Mining, Industrial water treatments etc. We offer 2 options for once off treatment to clear system or preventative treatment.

    Regards

    1. Hi Dave,
Thanks for your attention to my request. I can't find your email address. If it's possible send the documents related to OxyFlow to this address: alavimoghaddam@yahoo.com.    Regards,   M. Reza

    2. Dear Mr. Gaybba,

I'm Kowshick from Bangladesh. I'm interested in your Waste water and Industrial water treatments plants.

Can you please send us details about the OxyFlow solution.

  8. There are many companies that offer the services of remote controlled sewer scrubbing robots. This is the most efficient way to clean and inspect the pipes in one go.
