Cheap way to mitigate faecal matter odor?
Published on by Kae Man Man in Technology
We are working on constructing a cheap and sustainable toilet in our project area. However, one of the issues we are facing right now is odour generated at the site.
I am looking for a cheap way to eliminate or at least reduce this problem. Does anyone have any idea about possible ways which can be used for faecal matter odor mitigation?

In our bio-toilet designs at my company, we use fine and ultrafine bubble technology in a bio-reactor. I found this method to produce zero odor. Are you looking towards non-mechanical or mechanical method of faecal matter decomposition?

Bonjour
Hello (M.F) fecal matter is an organic matter. When this M.O. keeps its characteristics - biological - she exudes more smell.
As soon as the M.F loses its characteristics - biological - she enters a stage of putrefaction.
It's the M.F rot that gives off methane and more this putrefaction is advanced more putrid fumes there.
The M.F kept in an environment - organic - is any one biodegrade within 15 days without any pestilential release

Don't bother so much, simplest way to reduce or eliminate smell is by use of sato pan

Smell of fecal matter is due to reduction of Sulphur/ sulfur compounds present in fecal matter by microbes to H2S .best possible mitigation is to reduce the activity of these microbe either by neutralizing them by disinfectant, or by biotechnology.
use wood- charcoal. Carbon to absorb the smell and the gases associated with it. Can we try a similar experiment for this one also .
As an extension, cow-dung cakes- (gobar) are used as firewood, in rural kitchens, this ash, could be tried out for removal of fecal matter odor. The fecal matter when admixed with this ash could be composted , resulting in good manure.
It is well known that certain bacteria are responsible for bad odor. Therefore, there are a few methods you could explore to diminish the odor.
1. Use a cheap disinfectant to inhibit bacteria.
2. Mask the effect bad odor with another strong but pleasant odor. Many countries have their strong natural odors for these purposes. For example, in Sri Lanka, Lemongrass is used in public restrooms to disinfect, to mask the perception of a bad odor, and to introduce a pleasant fragrance.
3. EGTA (ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid) or a few other chelating agents are being added to the source of bad odor at very low concentrations reduce the perception of a bad smell.
4. The same effect can be achieved with Zn2Cl.

A septic tank is the solution for a small-scale sewage treatment system common in areas that lack connection to main sewage pipes.
In your Case you will leave it for 2 years before cleaning (sludge fermentation will take place by anaerobic bacteria.
Little water will come out after wile depend on how much water you use, you can use it to cultivate wooden trees.

If it is a pit latrine you simply install a vent pipe on the side exposed to the sun through the day. If possible the pipe should be black ti heat quickly. Remember to tie a fly screen on top. That wikl reduce thw amount of ordour inyour toilet.

I suggest lime to raise the pH thereby neutralizing the most odorous organic acids.

Since you want something cheap. You should get a lime fragrance odour eliminator and apply at intervals as needed. Most importantly i think you should work on the hygen or cleanliness of the toilet.

Good morning Kae,
This link may help you https://www.google.com/patents/US7229612 to elaborate the beginning of a solution, if little water is available.
Good luck and best regards,

Base upon my experiences and sharing;
- what type of toilet are you doing? is it fly proof latrine (pit)?
- then, there will be odour.
- there is a sample solution, divert the bad odour.

I've been wondering about fragrant oils after seeing the Poopourri ads. Obviously, the toilets need to be well managed to reduce odour as much as possible, but the fragrant oils could cover the last little bit - that 'earthy' smell.

Can you provide a description of your toilet? You need to identify the cause of the odors and the factors that influence odor generation. The alternative, which is to collect and remove the odors through air-flow will likely significantly increase cost.

If you have the right time of clay around, mixing in will help a lot. Ove

Maybe UV light treatment is an option. I assume that the UV radiation breaks down the molecules of the odour.
